Bushnell has been the leading Rangefinder on tour since they introduced their first model for golf. The original 1500/1600 model was the gold standard for numerous years and still is a great rangefinder. But others have been catching up with Bushnell by introducing new technologies that Bushnell didn't offer. In 2014 the X7 Rangefinder w/JOLT jumps back to the top as the best rangefinder on the market. The first thing that sets the Pro X7 apart from other rangefinders is the magnification. It is the only one with x7 power.

The others max out at x6. While that one power doesn't seem like much on paper, on the course, it is noticeable how much clearer and closer object get with that extra x1. Picture Pinseeker technology has always been a mainstay of the Bushnell laser rangefinders, but the Pro X7 has the latest and greatest version of it; E.S.P. 2 (Extreme. Speed. Precision.). Pair that with JOLT, there is almost no time lapse between pushing the button and getting the distance plus a nice little vibration(JOLT) to know you did.

I rarely shot a pin twice with this technology. I did find though that it will JOLT on other thin objects like fence posts or narrow trees behind the green. If you happen to be on a course with those object behind the green, you may want to shoot twice just to confirm you hit the flag and not an object in the background. It JOLTs anytime you shoot a yardage and the object is narrower. I found people on the green will cause it to JOLT just like a pin. Obviously anything with a prism is a dead lock instantly, but even non-prismed items could get a good read and lock extremely fast. Picture Bushnell improved a couple items that I felt they had fallen behind on.

Their display is now Vivid, with red numbers which are much easier to read, and are really bright no matter the lighting conditions. The old LCD black at times was hard to read. Possibly if someone is colorblind maybe the red is difficult, but because it is so bright I don't think even they will have an issue. The battery cover is also much improved. I remember having the battery cover pop off numerous times with the 1600 model, but the new cover remains in place no matter how rough you handle the rangefinder. Bushnell also moved from a 9v battery to a 3v camera style battery. While it might not be quite as convenient, I think the size difference is the biggest factor. I haven't had the Pro X7 long enough to know if the battery life will be a benefiting factor in the change, but I would imagine based on other products I've used with a 3v battery, it should last most of a season on one battery. Picture Bushnell includes an excellent carrying case for the Pro X7. It is a zippered square case with a carabiner to clip onto your bag. It also has a bungee strap that can be hooked to close the case so you don't need to use the zipper every time you want to remove the rangefinder. It works very well on the course.

All these features come in the largest rangefinder on the market too. While not huge, it does take up significantly more space in my push cart console. It still fits, but trying to keep my rangefinder, wallet, cell phone and a couple golf balls doesn't quite fit. Not that I need all that stuff in there, I'm just used to having it all there with a smaller rangefinder. The benefit of the large size of the unit is that it really is designed for two-hand usage which keeps it steadier for shooting distances. It is also held horizontal instead of vertical like the smaller ones. This too makes it very easy to use and stable. Picture Bushnell is the #1 laser rangefinder on tour. They added features to the Pro X7 to keep in at the top of the market. The improvements are significant and function extremely well during play. If you don't mind the bigger size, this is the best rangefinder Bushnell has put out. 

 

There was a lot of hype around the Bushnell Pro X7 when it came out, and for good reason. This rangefinder is the most accurate you’ll find on the market today, and only a couple minor things to criticize. We loved the X7 enough to name it Best Rangefinder in 2016.

First Impressions

Straight out of the box you’ll notice this rangefinder takes up most of the box and comes in a semi-hard zip-case, similar to the kind that nice pairs of headphones come in. The case has a carabiner clip to hang from your bag, which turns out to be necessary because of the size. I use a pretty small carry bag, like this one, so there’s not a ton of extra space. I could fit the X7 in my bag if I didn’t stuff my golf shoes in it. The battery comes included and I really didn’t need the instructions to get going.

I didn’t realize it initially but the elastic loop allows you to access it without having to loudly unzip it while someone else is in the middle of their backswing. It’s a small but smart little feature that shows that Bushnell pays attention to the details, which makes me trust the X7 more.

Feature By Feature Review

Accuracy to .1 yards when inside 125 yards

Hitting great approach shots means you need to be dialed in from short range. The X7 gives you an extra level of accuracy from .5 to .1 yard to give you extra confidence. You may not be accurate enough to need this precision now but you might need it once you see the impact on your game.

This feature doesn’t make a huge difference in my game but love having it for a 40 yard toss shot that I practice all the time. I’m pretty dialed in with it so that extra 14 inches of accuracy can make a difference.

7x Magnification

The 7x magnification that the Bushnell Pro X7 brings to the table is the best on the market. The extra magnification enables you to shoot the flag from a range of up to 550 yards. It also helps you to clearly see the slope and undulations of the green which means you can pick better targets on your approach shots. There’s also a dial for focusing the lens on it just like a DSLR camera.

Range

I tend to play flat courses so it’s a great feeling being able to shoot the flag on Par 5’s from way out, although you realistically only need about 300 yards. The extra weight it has helps stabilize it if you have shaky when you’re shooting.

Pinseeker

The Pinseeker technology has been around for a few years now and it really does make a difference between a non-pinseeking rangefinder. Most rangefinders in the $200+ range have it now, so it’s not all that different from the competition in this category.

Waterproof

Most competing models are only rainproof. I don’t plan on putting this to the test with my unit but I like having that extra defense if I drop it in a water hazard somehow.

E.S.P.

Bushnell’s ESP (“Extreme. Speed. Precision.”) Technology is designed to get your reading faster. Calling it “extreme” is a little extreme, but it’s definitely very fast. It gives a reading right away.

Vivid Display Technology

This is a fancy way of saying it adjusts the display based on the amount of light around you. There are 4 settings BRT1 – BRT4 with 4 being the brightest. It does help to adjust this when you’re playing in the evening and don’t want to blow up your round shooting in the dark.

Vetted by the Pros

Bushnell has more PGA Professionals using their rangefinders than all the other brands combined. Considering that no clubmakers have that kind of market share for irons or drivers, it speaks volumes for the quality of these units.

Feels Sturdy and Durable

This thing is heavy compared to most of the rangefinders you’re used to. It still weighs less than a pound so it’s not

Using the Pro X7

This thing is very user-friendly and minimizes the buttons. Just press the power button, aim and hold it until you get your reading. Adjusting the display brightness is just a matter of holding down Mode and toggling to the brightness level you want.

Final Thoughts in the Bushnell Pro X7 – Do I love it?

Yes! I really do love this thing. I’m shooting distances during all my range sessions, and usually twice each hole. My game has improved now that I really know my distances — I can’t round up my distances like I used to — but I also swing more confidently knowing I have the right club to put me in a better position to score. The only downside is how big it is, but it’s a tradeoff I’ll happily make for the extra level of precision, extra magnification and how it’s easier to hold steady.

You might assume that the Bushnell Tour Z6 is essentially the same as the prior generation Tour V2, but if you did, you’d be selling the new device significantly short. The Tour Z6 introduces higher magnification (6x), Bushnell’s new Vivid Display Technology (which is also found on the Bushnell Pro 1M and Bushnell Pro 1M Slope), faster readings from 5-125 yards with ½ yard accuracy and distances displayed down to 1/10th of a yard, and a waterproof shell. All of this, plus a better-looking design, for a mere $50 over the original price of the Tour V2. Not too shabby…

The Bushnell Tour Z6 measures distances from 5 to 1,300 yards (900 yards to trees and 450+ yards to flagsticks), and has a wider field of view than the Tour V2 and a number of competing devices – a nice benefit that Bushnell doesn’t really tout in its marketing materials.

The one shortcoming that will stand out to advanced laser rangefinder users is that the Tour Z6 does not have an “automatic scan” mode, a feature that enabled users to hold down the power/firing button, pan across multiple points and instantly receive distances to whatever is targeted (Bushnell seems to have decided to do away with “automatic scan” in 2012’s product offerings). With the Tour Z6’s always-on “PinSeeker” mode, users can only receive updated readings for an extremely brief period of time, and even then only when continuing to pan to sequentially closer targets.

EASE OF USE

The Tour Z6 is certainly a sharp-looking device. It is vertically oriented, with the main portion of the body encased in textured black rubber (for easy gripping) and smooth white aluminum trim extending at the front and back. The Tour Z6 weighs 7.9 ounces on its own and 11.6 ounces with the included carry pouch. A swiveling plastic clip on the back of the carry pouch clips the pouch to a bag, and the pouch features both a zipper (to completely stow away the rangefinder) and a magnetic latch (providing less security, but quicker access during play).

The display of the Bushnell Tour Z6 is clear and easy to read, with a slight tint to help reduce glare. The 6x magnification is the standard for rangefinders, but the field of view is the widest among rangefinders in our test. Players need to firmly press the power/firing button to turn the device on, then press the button again to start receiving distance readings. When we say “firmly” press the button, we really mean FIRMLY – the firing button of the Tour Z6 requires more effort to press and continue to keep depressed than any other device we’ve tested – who wants to join us in our class action against Bushnell for carpal tunnel syndrome? We kid, we kid…unless there’s actually a lawyer willing to take on the case.

The Tour Z6 displays the distance below the aiming circle (cross-hairs are displayed around the aiming circle when the laser is being fired), with the battery level indicated to its left. To the right of the distance is a flagstick icon that is part of the PinSeeker indicator – when the device has locked on to a target, a circle will surround the flagstick.

PinSeeker is always on in the latest generation of Bushnell rangefinders. What this means is that there is no longer the “automatic scanning” mode found in prior generation Bushnell devices, which allowed users to hold down the power/firing button, pan across multiple points and instantly receive distances to whatever is targeted. Once the Tour Z6 locks on a target, users can’t pan to a point farther from them and receive an updated distance. This makes it a bit of a pain when you’re trying to determine distances to carry multiple bunkers for a tee shot, or determining bunker faces and flagstick distances when attacking the green. In these cases you need to target a point, wait until a distance is returned, then re-fire, as opposed to simply holding down the fire button and panning across.

The Tour Z6 has an adjustable eyepiece (+/- 2 diopter) that is easy to turn (so easy, in fact, we accidentally twisted the eyepiece on several occasions when either putting the laser back into or removing it from its case).

There are only two buttons on the Tour Z6. The red power/laser button, located on the top of the Bushnell Tour Z6, is used to turn the device on and to fire the laser. The mode button, on the left side of the device (blending so much into the design you may not realize it is a button), allows the user to access the setup menu, from which preferences for brightness (we prefer the top two brightness levels) and unit of distance (yards and meters) can be adjusted. Users can’t change the style of the aiming circle/crosshairs.

The Bushnell Tour Z6 uses a single CR2 3-volt battery that inserts through a twist cap below the viewfinder. Bushnell recommends replacing the battery once every six months.

Easy operation

The Bushnell Z6 has been dubbed the most accurate and versatile rangefinder in the golfing industry because of its Pin Seeker, ESP.2, Vivid Display and Jolt technologies. With this powerful rangefinder, the display has been magnified up to 6 times with an adjustable eye piece setting for the users convenience. The display has a little tint added to it which helps lessen the glare and allows a wide scope and range field view. There are two buttons on the rangefinder where one button is used to turn on the device and also fire the laser which then tabulates the results. The laser can be fired between 4 to 8 seconds however; even after the button is released the results will continue to show on the display for a further 8 seconds.

Running power

The Bushnell Z6 runs on a single 3 volts CR2 battery which is included in the package at the time of shipping. It is placed under the viewfinder behind a Posi-Thread Battery Door. Even though Bushnell products are said to have a strong and long battery life, the manufacturers recommend changing the battery every 6 to 8 months for better usage.

Design

The vertically standing, compact yet user friendly, Bushnell Z6 has a rubber coating on most of its body for steady gripping and protection. There is also a fancy aluminum trim that encircles the rangefinder and adds to its good looks. At 8.2 ounces this a relatively light-weight rangefinder which further makes its handling easy and convenient for the avid golfer. Unlike earlier rangefinder models like the Bushnell V3, the Bushnell Z6 is superior and much enhanced in all its functions. Even though this advanced rangefinder is waterproof and has a rain guard over its lens, the manufacturers have also added a carrying case to help the golfer carry it around the course conveniently.

Long distance readings

The Bushnell Z6 is fully equipped to give you the most precise and accurate readings on a clear display screen which updates effortlessly unlike other rangefinders found in the market. The measurements of the flags are exact up to 450 yards while it also has the ability to lock on to other objects in a 5 to 1,300 yards diameter. Bushnell claims that the device has been programmed to give you an accuracy of 0.1 yards for objects closer than 125 yards. According to other rangefinder reviews on the product, users claim that the device picks up reflective objects quicker than others until the Pin Seeker system starts working and then automatically keeps updating the distance. For optimal coverage, it is best advised to aim at the flagstick’s base and the display’s accuracy becomes vague as the distance goes beyond a 200 yard radius.

Pin Seeker mode and Vibration jolt technology

Unlike earlier Bushnell rangefinders which worker on the automatic scanning mode, the newer generation rangefinders are equipped with the Pin Seeker technology which provides accurate yardage of different objects including flags up to 200 yards further. This precise targeting system zeros in on the target thus isolating any other objects in the way or in the background. If there is more than one object in view, the Pin Seeker will capture the closer object and display is information. Once the target has been acquired the Jolt technology gives out a short jolt to signal that the target has been obtained. Users claim that aiming at the base of the flagstick helps obtain better reading by avoiding any excessive things like trees in the background.

Vivid Display Technology

Hands down, the Vivid Display Technology is known to be the best projection display found in the market today. It has been specifically made for Bushnell’s rangefinders for increased clarity, contrast and light transmission. The display information has now drastically become better as the information can be viewed in red which makes it easier to read against darker settings. The optical enhancement provides better yardage information due to the 4 different levels of brightness adjustments available however; users have claimed to use only 2 which seem to work in all conditions.

ESP 2

The 2nd generation ESP (extreme speed precision) technology has taken the Bushnell Z6 on to a totally new level. The yardage speed has increased to 5 times and so has the acquisition of results speed which has far doubled than before. The accuracy of the distance displayed has been brought down to 1/10th yard which is accountable for 5 to 125 yards. Golfers now have an edge over their shots as they can properly strategize according to the accurate results obtained.

The Bushnell Tour v3 JOLT builds upon the prior generation Bushnell Tour V2, with the same magnification (5x), range performance (5-1000 yards), and accuracy (to within 1 yard). The Tour v3 introduces Bushnell’s JOLT technology, which provides short bursts of vibration to indicate that its PinSeeker technology has locked onto a target. The JOLT technology may not be for everyone, but if you don’t like it, you can turn it off – we found ourselves appreciating it more over time. We do note that the Tour v3 does not always indicate that it has locked onto the target (via icon of a circle surrounding the flagstick in the display) even when it is returning the correct distances, and if the device hasn’t determined that it is locked on, there will be no accompanying vibration. As a result, it became clear that we didn’t absolutely have to have indication that the laser was locked onto a target – if the distance appears accurate, it probably is.

When you fire the laser, the distances will intermittently update as you pan across objects. We found that the laser can continue to fire in the range of 3-5 seconds before it locks onto a target, after which the yardage will continue to display for 15 seconds after the firing button is released. Distances to additional targets can be obtained even after PinSeeker has locked onto a target if you continue to pan.

The Bushnell Tour v3 JOLT is a solid device and at $299, is $100 less than the Bushnell Tour V2 and one of the least expensive golf laser devices tested. It provides quick and accurate readings even without verification, which was OK with us. But if you are keen on the PinSeeker and JOLT functionality, just realize that you may not get feedback with every reading.

The Bushnell Tour v3’s always-on PinSeeker mode is prevalent in the Bushnell line and most competing products have a similar feature, all with the goal of locking onto the closest target within a line of sight, which under most circumstances is a flagstick against a background of trees or hills. PinSeeker works as well as it has on the Bushnell devices we have used in the past, which is to say that it is generally quite good, but not infallible. Occasionally the Tour v3 will lock onto objects behind the pin. It doesn’t happen often enough to give us any pause in recommending the device, and in the cases where it would initially provide distances to the background object (which is generally pretty obvious), a quick re-fire usually righted this wrong. “PinSeeker” is a bit of a misnomer, as it can provide locked-on distances to any target – trees, bunker faces, mounds, the group in front of you that you are considering driving into…

If a circle is not shown around the flagstick icon within the display, the device may still be providing the distance to the appropriate target, but for whatever reason is still sensing multiple objects in its path. We experienced this situation fairly frequently, and although there was no indication that the device has locked on to the target, it would still return the correct distance. It is difficult to say exactly when the Bushnell Tour v3 JOLT will “lock” onto a target and display the circle around the flagstick icon (indicating PinSeeker has found a target). Curiously, the device will often allow players to continue panning across targets (even after it JOLTS and displays the PinSeeker icon) for a range of 4-10 seconds

 

Lastly, let’s talk about the newest and most heavily-marketed feature of the Bushnell Tour v3: Bushnell’s JOLT technology. While most laser rangefinders provide some indication that the device has locked onto a target through either through some icon on the display and/or a beep or a tone, the Bushnell Tour v3 is the first device that adds haptics to a laser rangefinder. We weren’t enamored at first and looked for a setting that would enable us to turn the pulsing vibrations off (and while the manual indicates you can turn off JOLT, we aren’t able to do so on our device); however, over time we grew to appreciate the additional validation of locking onto a target. Some players will like the feature while others are satisfied with just a visual indicator and will find the JOLT to be no more than a marketing gimmick. Interestingly, the JOLT functionality hasn’t raised the price from the prior generation device (see ‘Value’, below), so whether you like it or not, at least you aren’t paying more for this feature compared to last years’ device.

The Bushnell Tour v3 provides distance information in 1-yard increments. The displayed distances don’t blink when they are being refreshed, so there are times when you’re firing the laser that you may wonder if the device is doing anything. If you’re in doubt, just check if cross-hairs are shown around the center aiming circle – that’s the indicator that the laser is being fired.

While the 5x magnification is at the low end of device magnification (the majority of quality rangefinders now offer 6x magnification), it’s a tradeoff for significant cost savings.

Additionally, the device is rainproof and has coated optics that are intended to help whisk away the rain and dust.

Spring is upon us and it’s time to golf! Bushnell golf is always trying to stay on top of their innovation game. As we have seen from them first hand last year with the Tour X rangefinder they have a new offering for the 2017 season. Bushnell claims their new Pro X2 is the World’s ultimate golf laser rangefinder for the avid golfer. Bushnell has again asked Busted Wallet to lend our opinion on the all new Pro X2 rangefinder. Now that the Busted Wallet crew has a dozen or so rounds with the Pro X2 we can give you our thoughts on it. So let’s dive in.

Design:

The Pro X2 feels solidly built and very comfortable in your hand. The contour on the bottom really conforms to your thumb wrapping around and holding the Pro X2. The size of the Pro X2 is perfect for my average sized hands. I wouldn’t want it any bigger or smaller. The rubber armored metal housing feels like it could take a minor drop and keep on ticking. So we dropped it a couple times from waist height onto the paved cart path. Aside from a minor scratch or scuff on the rubber it did just fine. Bushnell claims the Pro X2 is “fully waterproof.” So is it? We were curious so we held it under the faucet for a minute. Pouring water directly into the eye piece, battery door, and optics. Then filled the sink with water and let it sit fully submerged for five minutes. We pulled it out, dried it off, and bam it still works! So, yep, it’s fully waterproof. Good job Bushnell, you didn’t lie. So if you leave your Pro X2 in your bag outside overnight and it rains (this has happened to me, maybe beers were involved) it will still work. I know that was a huge concern of yours.

 

The dual display technology is not new but still allows you to switch between bright red display or black depending on the lighting of the day. The slope switch technology is super nice to determine exactly how that shot up or downhill will play. If you want to conform to USGA rules you can turn the slope feature off with the flick of a switch on the side. So you’re covered either way. The 6x magnification is a great feature that allows you to really focus in on your intended target. In my opinion, the best feature of the Pro X2 and what makes Bushnell the best rangefinder on the market is the pinseeker with JOLT technology. In my experience, using cheaper rangefinders without this you may think you are focused on the flag but you then fly the green by 10 yards and realize you were focused on the tree behind the pin, annoying. And now you’re hitting out of the junk to get back to the green. The pinseeker with JOLT ensures you are looking at the pin.

Overall, we agree Bushnell makes the best rangefinders on the market every year and the Pro X2 is at the top of our list. One thing about Bushnell golf that we really like is their trade-in program. Bushnell realizes you always want the best technology and technology is always changing. It’s also expensive to always have the latest. So Bushnell offers you at least a little bit back for your upgrade.

Ease of Use:

Much like Bushnell’s other rangefinders the Pro X2 is what I would call fool proof to use. Point it at what you want a distance on, look through the eye piece (very important step), and press and hold the power button on top. Boom, that’s it, you get a distance. Wanna use the dual display function? That is also easy. Just press the Bushnell logo on the side of the unit to toggle between the red and black graphic displays to best suit the lighting situation you are in. Something out of focus? Use the dial in front of the eye piece to utilize the 6x magnification if you need it. How long does the battery last? We are not sure. We’ve used it on over 12 rounds of golf this year and it still shows a full battery. Just in case maybe throw an extra battery in your bag so you don’t get stuck on the course with a dead battery (not included).

The pinseeker with JOLT really locks onto the flag quickly. Much quicker than other off-brands we have used in the past. The JOLT vibration tells you it is locked on the flag and not some other object. In summary, I would say the Pro X2 is very easy to use.

 

Accuracy:

The Pro X2 promises to be accurate to within +/- half a yard at a range of 5-1300 yards. I was able to get a reading at 3 yards away inside my house. Not sure why you would do that on the course but I did it just to Bushnell Pro X2 Reviewsee. The farthest I could get a reading on something was a light pole across the river I live on at 940 yards away. I don’t know any golf holes that you would need that kind of distance but it’s there if you need it. Maybe moon golf, not sure. As far as being accurate to within the a half yard. I can say that we compared the Pro X2 readings to the Tour X they were always within a yard of each other. When using the slope function it did seem to add or subtract the appropriate yardage. For instance we played a par 3 with a listed 101 yard range playing downhill about 50 feet. The Pro X2 told me it played at 85 yards and boom that won me a closest to the pin bet!

The new Pro X2 has a simple switch on the side of the rangefinder that allows you to toggle the Slope mode on or off. If you’re wondering why you would want a rangefinder with Slope when it can’t be used in competition (or technically in rounds where the score is posted for handicap purposes), here are a few reasons:

Bushnell's rangefinder line continues to evolve in 2017 with new additions like the Trophy and Trophy Xtreme rangefinders. We take an overview look at the current Bushnell rangefinder lineup in side by side comparison charts and then give a brief description of each model. Finally, we explain some of the common features found on these units.

ARC – Some Bushnell rangefinders are equipped with ARC (Angle Range Compensation) technology which is capable of factoring in the angle of the shot. Within the ARC feature there are two sub modes: Bow and Rifle. It is important to note that some rangefinders like the Bushnell Bowhunter only have one sub feature, in the Bowhunter’s case only a Bow mode is offered.

Bow Mode - Bushnell rangefinders that use the ARC technology and are equipped with the Bow mode display: a line of sight measurement in yards, the angle of the shot in degrees, and angle compensated reading in yards. It is important to note that angle compensate reading in Bow mode are limited to 99 yards, and while this isn’t really an issue when archery hunting it does pretty much eliminate using the unit in this mode for angle compensated readings when hunting with a centerfire rifle. Rifle Mode - Bushnell rangefinders equipped with the Rifle sub mode feature ballistic charts that match many popular hunting cartridge loads. The user selects one of these charts and then the rangefinder will give the user a line of sight yardage reading, the angle of the shot in degrees, and angle compensated distance is calculated and returned as holdover in inches. It is important to note that no angle compensated yardage is given in Rifle mode, you could use the unit in Bow mode to get an angle compensated reading in yards, but that will only work out to 99 yards.

VSI – Variable Sight In is an added feature in the Rifle Mode of some but not all Bushnell rangefinders. The VSI feature also consists of ballistic charts to choose a trajectory that best matches your hunting cartridge; however, it also allows the user top select from one the following sight in distances: 100 yds, 150 yds, 200 yds, or 300 yds.

Target Priority – Sometimes while using a rangefinder the laser will hit and return the distance of two objects, say a deer and the tree behind it. What distance if any displays is dependent on how the manufacture set the rangefinder to deal with this situation. Some Bushnell rangefinders are equipped with selectable target priority modes which Bushnell calls Brush and Bullseye.

Brush – When a Bushnell rangefinder with target priority modes is set to the Brush mode the rangefinder will display the reading to the farther of two objects reported. For example, if the rangefinder reads a branch at 15 yards and a deer at 125 yards it will report the object at 125 yards. Brush mode is frequently favored by archery hunters who are often hunting from a treestand or dense cover.

Bullseye – When a rangefinder is set in Bullseye mode it will do just the opposite of the Brush mode; the Bullseye mode will return the closer of two objects. For example if the rangefinder gets a reading on an antelope at 173 yards and a rock behind it at 235 yards it will return the closer of the two, the antelope in this case.

At just 9cm by 7cm this is one of the smallest lasers on the market and is 2cm shorter and 55 grams lighter than the original Nikon Coolshot.

This gives it a big advantage over most of the other lasers on the market as it is thin enough to be easily slipped into a trouser or jacket pocket between shots so you don't have to keep reaching into your bag.

The Coolshot 20 features a 6x magnification lens that is accurate up to 500m or 550yds, so not quite as far as the Coolshot, but I doubt anyone hits it that far anyway.

The Coolshot 20 is very easy to use. You just point it at your target and then push the rear button that then turns the device on so you can get the target in the crosshairs. After around 8 seconds it automatically turns it off to save battery power and there is a battery charge meter on the screen to keep an eye on this.

 

The front Mode button is for changing from yards to metres, making the device simple and intuitive to use.

The lens uses Nikon's First Target Priority system so that it will always pick out the flag from the background and the distances are shown in 1 yard/metre increments clearly on the screen in good sized numbers

 

It was very easy to pick up flags or other objects up to 200 yards, but like the Coolshot before, it sometimes requires a little more time to recognise the flag over 200 yards, especially in windy conditions.

For those who are visually challenged the Coolshot 20 is easy enough to use with glasses, or you can adjust the focus on the eyepiece if you want to use with the naked eye to accommodate any long or short sightedness, which is a good feature.

 

Below it is the battery compartment that takes the standard CR-2 battery and you can usually get several months’ use with average levels of play, so no re-charging or downloading is required.

 

If you have already experienced the Coolshot then I think the Coolshot 20 is a worthy upgrade, principally for the size as it does the same job to the same high standard, but in a design that can be carried on your person rather than in your bag.
